Abstract

The practicum was conducted at Asia Paper Industrial Corporation (APUC) located at Brgy. Cabuco, Trece Martires City, Cavite. the training lasted for a total of 240 hours which started from 19ᵗʰ of April to 28ᵗʰ of May 2010. APIC is a paper manufacturing company producing high quality book paper and bond paper with a designed production capacity of 30 metric tons per day. Unlike other paper mills in the Philippines (e.g. AbacaMills, Brown Kraft, Integrated Paper Mill), APIC has less complexity since deinking was eliminated in the process. A special topic was conducted during the practicum. The study evaluated the strength properties of the AG Bond paper from recycled wastepaper. Specifically, the study aims to compare the strength properties of bond paper from APIC to the BPS standard of a bond paper and bond paper sold in the market analyze the additive content on the bond paper samples and provide a better understanding of the different strength properties of paper. Bond paper samples from APIC and commercial bond were tested for burst strength, tear strength, tensile strength, folding endurance, basis weight and thickness. Handsheet properties of both bond paper samples were also tested for further comparison to the result of the strength properties of the bond paper. Results showed that the tested strength properties of AP{IC bond paper had an overall lower strength properties compared to the commercial bond paper and to the BPS standards. Additive content were determined by thr ash content values which yielded 10.86% for APIC bond and 9.23% foe commercial bond. Higher value of ash content is related to the amount of additives, usually fillers, present in the bond paper sample.
