Abstract
The University of the Philippines Los Baños uses thousands of electronic appliances for administrative and academic purposes. However, such appliances are left on standby mode or unplugged on the power outlet even if it is not being used for normal operation. as result, some f the appliances continue to consume electricity. These unnecessary consumptions are called standby consumption or phantom loads. As a part of the energy conservation program of the university, these power consumptions are assessed and a possible solution to reduce these was also presented. In this study, the standby power consumptions of major office appliances in the university were measured using a digital power meter and the appropriate sample size was determined using stratified random sampling method. For the second part of the study, an automatic power strip or power outlet which will disconnect appliances that are detected to be on standby was designed. Using National Instruments Multisim 11.0 electronics simulations software, the designed circuit was tested and simulated. The results of the simulations show that the logic and function of the design are working properly. Furthermore, results showed that the standby energy consumption of the university can be reduced by 20, 193.60kW-hr up to 20,731.20kW-hr per year by using the designed automatic power strip.
