Abstract

Marikina River is an effluent dominated river that serves as a drainage basin flowing from Rodriguez, Rizal down to Pasig City. Due to discharge of untreated sewage, it became polluted and showed an appreciable decline in its water quality. This study assessed the impact of constructing a separate sewer system for the larger purpose of managing the river's water quality. Water quality was evaluated by its Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). Water quality modeling was done by developing the Oxygen Sag Curve for each level of sewer coverage. Results showed that Marikina River already exceeded its class C requirement and fell underClass D classification. Despite of still producing a low initial DO concentration that failed to meet the DO standards set for class C, full sewer coverage must still be constructed to alleviate the worsening condition of the river. However, even with full sewer coverage, Class C cannot be attained without any improvement on the water quality of the river itself.
