Abstract

This study investigated the accelerated corrosion of steel bar in terms of the time to initiate crack using Impressed Voltage Test. Corrosion of steel bars was investigated for a Type I and Type IP cement carried out on 200mm x10mm cylindrical concrete specimens with water cement-ratios of 0.5 and 0.6 and a constant curing of 28 days. Results showed that for specimens with water-cement ratio of 0.6, Type I concrete took longer time to initiate crack than Type IP. On the other hand, for specimens with water-cement ratio of 0.5 Type IP concrete took longer time to initiate cracking than Type I. Thus, the use of Type IP concrete with water-cement ratio of 0.5 is best for concrete structures near marine environment since it took longer time to initiate crack. Thus, Type IP cement concrete with water-cement of 0.5 showed greater resistance to chloride penetration.
