Abstract
The study aimed to determine the costs of shifting in the University of the Philippines Los Baños. To arrive at this cost computation, it was first necessary to compute for the total cost of instruction per student credit of each college offering undergraduate degree courses. The study employed Dr. Edita Tan’s 2003 framework for the computation of the cost of degree programs in UP. The study showed that among the colleges that offer undergraduate degrees in the university, the College of Agriculture (CA) had the highest total cost of instruction per student credit (P 10,709). This was followed by the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR) at P 5,301, and the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at P 2,467. The College of Development Communication (CDC) had the lowest cost per student credit at P 315. The results imply that the cost of shifting greatly varies by college. A logistic regression was employed to describe the relationship between the commitment of students to stay and several independent variables patterned after Tinto’s Student Integration Model (SIM) plus other variables deemed appropriate for UPLB. However, only peer influence was significant thus, a correlation test was also utilized in order to come up with the true relationship between the students’ commitment and its explanatory variables. This enabled the study to identify the characteristics of students who are more likely to shift.
