Abstract
Abstract: A survey and field collection on rust fungi parasitizing plants were conducted in selected areas in Northern (Benguet) province, Central (Tarlac and Pampanga) province and Southern Luzon (Batangas and Cavite provinces) and towns in Laguna province (Caliraya, Majayjay and Cavinti). New records of rust fungi in the country resulted from the conduct of the study. Three out of ten rust species were identified to be new records. These were Crossopsora sp. on unidentified creeper or vine, Tranzschelia sp. and Phragmidium sp. both on Rubus sp. Urediniospores characterized with depression on sides forming an elevated center and hyaline envelope forming another wall?like structure were new features not observed from other known rust fungi prevalent in the country. Neglected structures for full morphological characterization of rust fungi are the paraphyses. Detailed examinations revealed the existence of basally located paraphyses on Crossopsora sp., Phakopsora sp. and Tranzschelia sp. Paraphyses associated in Crossopsora sp. were erect with truncate apices while those of Phakopsora sp. and Tranzschelia sp. were slightly curved but with round apices.
