Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the performance and impact of Women for Progress of Nagpayong Multi-purpose Cooperative (WPNMPC) on socio-economic conditions of members. The specific objectives of the study were to: (1) characterize the organization and operation of WPNMPC (2) analyze the financial performance (2009-2013) of WPNMPC (3) determine members? assessment of the performance of WPNMPC (4) determine the effects of WPNMPC on the income of members (5) assess the impact of WPNMPC on the socio-economic conditions of members as to savings, ability in supporting expenditures on clothing and education of children, home consumption, acquisition of household durables and assets, and house repairs and (6) identify problems encountered by WPNMPC and recommend possible solutions. Primary and secondary data were used in the study. To achieve the objectives, the study employed narrative and descriptive analyses, computation of financial ratios, likert scale and comparison of means using before and after analysis through the student?s t-test. The computed financial ratios showed that the cooperative had an average current ratio (liquidity) of 2.67, average net capital ratio (solvency) of 7.82, average return on asset ratio (profitability) of 0.75 and average gross ratio (efficiency) of 0.68. These ratios revealed that WPNMPC was financially stable during the period 2009-2013. The cooperative members often attended meetings, elections of officers and trainings and seminars and sometimes attended general assembly only. It was also found out that the members perceived their officers? honesty and transparency, visionary ability, decision-making ability, dedication and leadership as satisfactory. Results also showed that members were satisfied with the quality of their products, namely rags and uniforms and water lily products. Comparison of means showed that the average increase in the members? income after joining WPNMPC was significant at alpha five percent. After joining WPNMPC, majority of the members reported an improvement in their home consumption and were able to support expenditures on clothing and education of children. Lack of a formal system of bookkeeping, non-attendance of members in meetings and activities of the cooperative and inactive members were the problems identified by the officers. On the other hand, lack of transparency among the officers, conflict between officers, inactive officers, uneven distribution or sharing of profit of the cooperative and delayed salaries were the problems identified by the members. Based from the results of the study, the following recommendations were formulated: (1) adopt a formal system of bookkeeping (2) recruit more members (3)resolve conflict between officers, and (4) impose penalties on members for nonattendance in meetings and activities of the cooperative.
