Abstract
The geographic location of the Philippines is mainly the explanation why it is considered as a disaster-prone country. Tropical cyclone is one of the natural hazards occurring mostly anywhere in the Philippines every year. Typhoon phenomena can cause a lot of destructions not only in the everyday lives of people but also to structures like buildings and bridges where safety and economy depends. It is for this reason that studies relating to these phenomena are important. The data records of significant typhoon parameters used in this research came from the best-track typhoon database of Japan Meteorological Agency-Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (JMA-RSMC) from 1951 to 2013. Probability distribution functions (PDFs)determination was conducted to find out the best fitting distribution of typhoon parameters namely: latitude, longitude translation speed (C), translation direction(O), center pressure(Pc), and radius of maximum wind speed (Rm). The model foe these parameters was then utilized for typhoon simulation to estimate extreme wind speed to develop a wind map according to design wind speed, which is crucial for structural engineers in designing structures. However, the simulation can provide unrealistic combination of parameters. For this reason, establishment of relationship among tropical cyclone parameters is necessary. This predicament will be addressed by this study since establishment of typhoon parameter relationships is not yet studied in the Philippines. The results of this study show that the typhoon parameter combinations have an indicative and evident relation. At the end of the research, a set of empirical relations were established.
