Abstract

A fabricated up-flow fixed bed biofilm reactor using pure culture of Bacillus megaterium was investigated regarding its ability to treat copper polluted wastewater and actual semiconductor effluents.Effect of varying initial copper concentration, 1ppm and 100ppm, on the performance of the reactor was analyzed. Actual semiconductor wastewater was treated for verification. A preliminary costing analysis was also done. results show that within six days operation, runs using copper polluted wastewater did not reach steady-state. Steady-state can be observed for the actual wastewater run. Low level run had a copper residua of 0.794 ppm and 52ppm was obtained from the high level run. Actual wastewater obtained a copper residual of 1.21 ppm from an initial concentration of 4.2 ppm. Copper removal efficiency for low and high level are 33.5% and 37.7%, respectively. A copper removal efficiency of 71.2% was obtained when treating actual semiconductor effluents. The preliminary costing done shows an investment of Php to Php 326878.05. Increase in initial concentration leads to decrease in cost per milligram copper removed. It is proven uneconomical to use the said technology using pure culture of Bacillus megaterium. Further studies has to be done to improve the use of the fixed bed biofilm column in treating copper..
