Abstract
Actual operations and practical applications were observed in the field practice in BUSCO Milling Company, Inc. Several unit operations are involved in the sugar industry. The first step in the sugar production is the extraction of juice from the sugarcane in the milling tandems. Impurities in the extracted juice is removed by means of clarification. The impurities or the mud undergoes filtration to recover the remaining juice while the clarified juice undergoes evaporation to remove the water and produce syrup. The syrup is further concentrated into a material called massecuite in the boiling house. Raw sugar is separated from the molasses through centrifugation process. The raw sugar undergoes refining process to remove the colorants and increase purity. The process starts with remelting the raw sugar or affirmation. The next process id carbonation wherein the carbon dioxide is introduced to the liquor to further remove the impurities such as colorants and non-sugars. It proceeds to decolorization for higher degree of color removal. It then undergoes evaporation, white pan boiling centrifugation and packaging. Two grades of raw sugar is produced, the standard and premium grade. A special topic which focuses on the decolorization of the spent Ion Exchange Process effluent was undertaken wherein the obtained results were compared to the method of decolorization the company is using.
