Abstract

The case study on Pinagdanlayan Rural Improvement Club Multi-purpose Cooperative (PRIC MPC) in Dolores, Quezon was conducted to assess the cooperative?s present management operation and overall performance. Specifically, it aimed to evaluate the macro and micro environments of the cooperative conduct an analysis relating such dynamics to the four business function of the management identify PRIC MPC?s business issues and derive problems related to those and, recommend specific courses of action based on the findings of the study. PRIC MPC was a former association that was organized to disseminate information for the grassroot farmers. The initiators thought that it will be helpful if the Rural Club will be transformed into a cooperative. Thus, with the help of some government agencies, the Pinagdanlayan Rural Improvement Club became official as a cooperative in 2004. The cooperative has been engaged in different business activities such as producing powdered ginger tea and other food products as well as non-food products like ginger massage oil and dishwashing liquid, re-lending, savings account for members, catering and rental services, and consumer store that contributes to the income of the cooperative. The cooperative has been producing powdered ginger tea since 2006. It has also been part of the One Town One Product Program of the National Government which has given them additional capital which was used to improve the production of the powdered ginger tea. The cooperative has also other income generating businesses like consumer store, re-lending services which are exclusive for their full-pledge members, saving account for members, catering, and rental services. At present, the main buyer of their powdered ginger tea is Prominex Venture Inc. The cooperative has also been selling to 35 pasalubong stores located in CALABARZON and Metro Manila areas. By processing the data collected from the cooperative, issues on the four business functions (marketing, operation, organization and finance) were determined. The strengths, weakness, threats and opportunities were also identified and analyzed to identify the main problem of the cooperative. After analyzing the four business functions and the macro and microenvironments of the cooperative, the main problem determined lies on improving the current market strategy of the cooperative that will improve the product turnover of their outlets. Due to poor performance of some of the outlets, the cooperative has been incurring high amounts of receivables. Three alternatives were derived from matching the key internal and external factors in the SWOT matrix and were proposed to address the problem. These were market penetration, product development and market development. After evaluating the alternatives using the preference matrix, it was found out that the most appropriate strategy for the problem was market penetration by maximizing the sales which can be generated by the outlets. This selected alternative will give full benefits to the cooperative. The low performing outlets will be shed off and the most performing outlets will be retained. The cooperative will also continue to search for new productive outlets in the near future. Thus, this will improve the product turnover of the outlets. It is expected that with the implementation of this strategy, the account receivables will be lessened thus, farther the financial status of the cooperative will be improved.
