Abstract
Wind is a variable source of energy which results to variable output. Maximizing wind energy to its full potential will compensate to its variability. Department of Energy (DOE) uses WindPRO 2.7 software to calculate and optimize different wind projects in the Philippines. Pagudpud wind farm was optimized using the different modules of the software. Prediction of the long term site data was obtained using the MCP/Statgen Module of the software which resulted to a mean wind speed of 7.55m/s. Furthermore, different factors affecting the wind farm output such as altitude, obstructions, wind power and blade aerodynamics were discussed and calculated using the PARK module. The power output increases as the altitude, wind power and rotor blade diameter increase. The calculation resulted to a higher power output when the factors were considered and the optimized layout was used. The OPTIMIZATION module follows the heuristic placement algorithm where it continuously calculates the array losses for each attempt to find the optimal layout. The results of optimization yielded to higher energy output with 564,615 MWh/y and park efficiency of 94.1%. These results show that the optimization module of the software was able to maximize the wind energy resource of the wind farm site.
