Abstract
Sweet sorghum has been the subject of different studies in order to assess its viability as an alternative feedstock for bioethanol production. In this study, Saccharomyces bayanus was used to produce ethanol from sweet sorghum of variety SPV 422. Optimization was done using Design Expert & (trial version). Central composite design was implemented. The amount of reducing sugar consumed was analysed using DNS method, while the ethanol yield was determined using gas chromatography. Of all the optimization runs, the highest ethanol yield was 8.06% v/v, while the greatest amount of sugar consumed is about 88% of the initial reducing sugar content. The optimum parameters for ethanol production were found to be pH 4.0 and 30% inoculum loading. Confirmatory runs were done under sterile and unsterile compared to 84% of the sterile set-up. Based on this, the performance of S.bayanus is better at unsterile conditions. The ethanol yield for unsterile set-up(8.22%) is higher than the sterile set-up (8.06%).
