Abstract

The main objective of the farm practice was to acquire hands-on experience in managing a poultry layer farm, particularly RosMac Farm in Batangas. Its specific objectives were: to acquire knowledge on the practices employed in managing the farm; to describe the feed mill operations; determine the profitability of producing eggs using day-old chicks (DOCs) and ready-to-lay pullets (RTLPs) as laying stock; to determine the factors being considered in deciding whether to expand or contract their business operation; and to determine the problems encountered in the management of the farm and recommend possible solutions to address them. Cost and returns, return on investment, and SWOT analyses along with partial budgeting and physical efficiency tests were employed. The cost and return analysis per 1,000 heads of birds using actual production data revealed that DOCs generated higher net income since the cost of buying DOCs (PhP20.00/bird) is much lower than the cost of buying RTLPs (PhP185.00/bird). Since the layers at the time of the farm practice were still on their productive stages, costs and returns for the remaining 14 weeks of productive cycle were projected. The standards based on the farm’s historical egg production performance were used in the projection process (83% and 85% for RTLP and DOC, respectively). It was confirmed that net income generated from using DOCs was higher. In addition, the results of the partial budget analysis for shifting from RTLPs to DOCs as layer stock (based on projected income statement) show that there will be an additional net income of PhP111,310/1000 birds if the farm will use DOCs and that the avoided cost will be PhP78,700. The main factor being considered by the owner whether to expand or contract their business operation is the high demand for eggs. SWOT analysis revealed that the farm can continue to be a profitable business but its profitability can still be improved if its weaknesses and threats will be properly addressed and strengths and opportunities taken advantaged through proper farm management. It was recommended that the farm should start their layer stock from DOCs rather than buying RTLPs since they can generate more income from the former.
