Abstract
The effects of tillage on soil compaction using a standard light four-wheel tractor (33.1KW0 with disc plow attachment was conducted at 3.0kph, 3.5kph and 4.0kph forward speeds. To determine soil compaction, bulk density and penetration resistance were measured. Two methods were employed in measuring the soil compaction. First is measuring the soil compaction of the plowed area using thr four-wheel tractor with two-bottom disc plow attachment (trial A)and the second measuring the soil compaction of the plowed area with one pass of the tractor wheel (trial B). Results show that the highest blk density was obtained at forward speed of 3.0 kph both for trial A (1188.12kg/m³) and the trial B (1231.84kg/m³). Moreover, at 3.0 kph also, the highest penetration resistance was obtained for trial A (4.45kg/cm²) and for trial B (4.69kg/cm²). As bulk density and penetration resistance increases, there is an increase in soil compaction and as the forward speed decreases, the obtained bulk density and penetration resistance increases. Furthermore, there is a relatively small variation on the moisture content obtained on the test area for all trials.
