Abstract

This work presents an alternative method of calculating the beam parameters of negative ions produced using a plasma sputter-type negative ion source. The method involves the use of a graphical user interface (GUI) which acquires data from an excel file. Current and voltage values are selected from a pop-up menu. The GUI graphs both raw and processed data; calculates and displays significant parameters such as energy spread, and ion current. The results are compared with results obtained from Origin calculation following the same process. It was proven that the MATLAB- based GUI automatically calculates FWHM and shows a low percent difference from the Origin calculation. For 100eV Au- ions, the calculated energy spread using the GUI and Origin calculations are 2.67 eV and 2.79 eV respectively. With the introduction of noise to the raw data, the GUI obtained a better FWHM than the Origin calculation. For 400eV Au-ions at 40.0V Vd, the calculated energy spread using the MATLAB GUI without noise and with noise are 2.79 eV and 2.83 eV respectively. For 400eV Au-ions at 40.0V Vd, the calculated energy spread using Origin without noise and with noise are 2.59 eV and 2.88 eV respectively. The ion energy for 200eV Au- at 40.0V Vd ions using the GUI and Origin calculations are 20.50 nA and 20.50 nA respectively. Also, calculations using the MATLAB-based approach takes only 5-10 seconds while the Origin-based approach takes 3-4 minutes. The GUI was subjected into evaluation under 50 beta testers from the University of the Philippines Los Ban˜os.The testers evaluated the GUI in terms of appearance and usability at a rate of 1-10 with 10 as the highest. The average score for the appearance of the GUI was 8.37. The average score for the usability of the GUI was 8.43.
