Abstract
Post-production is a general term applied to the handling of crops, whether used for food or other purposes, from harvest until they reach the final consumer. This report covers primary processing of banana. It includes postproduction activities that involve handling of banana to make them suitable to the manufacturer or consumer. Quantitative and qualitative losses are incurred during the handling operations. These losses can be lessened through an extensive observation and evaluation of the operations in the packing plant. This report evaluates the different post-production operations and management practices of Packing Platn 120 of Sumifru (Philippines) Corporation, a known packing plant located in New Corella, Davao de Norte. Specifically, PP 120 was observed and evaluated based on the waste management practices, quality control, product's safety, plant maintenance, personnel's safety, and pest control. During harvest until loading to the reefer vans, monitoring and quality checking of the banana is done. Each operation is very crucial to the resulting quality of the commodity. Thus, proper and careful handling is needed. Also, checking and maintenance of the equipment is a great need. Another factor that may contribute to losses are pest and diseases. With this, the packing plant ensures that the facility is always clean and the product is free from any pest and toxic materials. The company ensures that it is producing high quality bananas for export. However, the assessment of the packing plant exposed common problems arising from any banana packing plant such as improper handling of products, lack of ventilation in the area, lack of wearing protective gears such as face masks, and absence of regular calibration and maintenance of some equipment. These problems must be avoided and prevented immediately to reduce losses and maintain the good quality of the product. Addressing the problems would also avoid delay in the operation, hence will help in meeting the demand of the importing countries.
