Abstract

The Partial Discharge Analyzer - IV (PDA-IV) is one of the devices used and distributed by SuperServe Corporation for monitoring partial discharge activities among hydrogenerators. This study discussed the improvement in technology of the device and assessed its performance in the process of monitoring partial discharges. The paper also illustrated the configuration of the elements necessary in the process. Four types of data were presented and three methods of interpreting these data were introduced, explaining how to correctly discuss the sample test results given by the company with the aid of tables and flowcharts. It was found that lots of development were made from the previous type of devices that monitor partial discharges specifically in the type of sensors used and the frequency of operation. Tables were also generated to provide a summary of different cases of partial discharge activity and their corresponding remarks, showing that a machine is in bad condition when the partial discharge magnitude is higher than the typical value set by the Irish Power, and when the increase in this parameter from the current reading is greater than 150 percent of the previous value. The PDA-IV is accurate in giving test results that lead to creating a better plan for the maintenance of electrical machines and can avoid unnecessary expenses because if gives a more specific and clear guide on determining the problems that are occurring in the machine and equipment.
