Abstract

Electrocardiograms (ECG) of 43 dogs with coughing were studied to determine and describe waveform (P-QRS-T) measurements and arrhythmias. Data collected were classified and grouped based on the etiology of diagnosis. Prolonged P duration (0.06 ± 0.03 seconds) was seen in the majority of the population, with a statistically higher rate of occurrence in patients with cardiac disease (X2, p = 0.0125). Twenty-six arrhythmias were seen in twenty-one dogs with five dogs showing two arrhythmias is the same ECG tracing. Arrhythmias were most observed in cardiac patients (15/26). Regardless of etiology, atrial fibrillation was the most frequently occurring arrhythmia (9/26), followed by sinoatrial (SA) blocks (7/26), atrioventricular (AV) blocks (6/26), and ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) (4/26). Results suggest electrocardiography be warranted on coughing cardiac patients for better clinical assessment.
