Effects of varying levels of copra meal, protein enriched copra meal and the fermentation media on the clinicopathologic features in Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus)

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the safety of copra meal (CM), protein enriched copra meal (PECM) and fermentation media (FM) at four different concentrations (1,000 mg/kg, 5,000 mg/kg, 15,000 mg/kg and 20,000 mg/kg) by assessing the clinicopathologic effects on Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus). Forty-six (46) mice were given specified treatments using single dose gastric gavage. Results showed no apparent differences in the pre-treatment and post-treatment evaluation of behavior, physical appearance and body weight gain (Student‟s T-test at α=5%). The mean of the control and treatment groups were statistically the same in the following parameters: packed cell volume (Two-Way ANOVA at α=5%), total leucocyte count (One-Way ANOVA at α=5%). The No significant elevations were found in the alanine aminotransferase and creatinine. Urinalysis and fecal output observation were unremarkable. The gross organ examination of the skin, heart, brain, lungs, liver, spleen, stomach, intestine and kidneys were comparable with the control and no significant treatment-related histopathologic lesions were identified. Based on the results, CM, FM and PECM is safe and non-irritating. However, in food animals, clinical trials must be done to assess their economic value in terms of palatability, effects on production performance as feed replacement to soybean meal.
