Abstract

The poultry industry of the Philippines contributessignificantly to the country's agriculture sector. This study was aimed to determine the antiparasitic effect of different extracts of Gliricidia sepium leaves against Megninia cubitalis and Pterolichus obtusus of chickens. Feather mites were collected from a poultry layer farm. Ten (10) mites were placed in each petri dish with filter paper. The different extracts were placed in individual spray bottles and each had 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% concentrations in relation to distilled water. The different extracts were applied by spraying the solution to the feather mites. Mites were observed for 30 min, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours, and 6 hours. Percent mortality per dish were observed and recorded. The different Gliricidia leaves extract (crude ethanolic extract using 60% ethanol, crude ethanolic extract using 80% ethanol and decoction from fresh Gliricidia leaves extract) are all effective against the feather mites, Megninia cubitalis and Pterolichus obtusus in an in vitro experiment. The crude ethanolic extract using 60% and 80% ethanol are the most effective against the feather mites according to statistical analysis.
