Abstract

This thesis aims to examine the life of the Discalced Carmelite nuns using Kate Millet?s Theory of Sexual Politics. The former is a form of nunnery under the religious institution of Roman Catholicism. They live a life distinct from other Orders through practicing serious contemplation and prayer dedicated towards the community, to God and to one?s self. The latter, on the other hand, is a radical feminist theory that emerged from the second wave feminist movement. This particular theory is deliberately written in the Chapter Two of her published work entitled ?Sexual Politics.? Here, she intricately examined the presence of patriarchy within the different aspects of society. As the synthesis of this study, the two principles of the Discalced Carmelite Nunnery and the Theory of Sexual Politics will be merged together, recognizing their consistencies with each other. This thesis then, claims that Sexual Politics is actually present within the realm of the Discalced Carmelite Nunnery, through the different aspects mentioned by Kate Millet herself.
