Abstract

Video games have gone a long way since its early conception in the 1970s. It has evolved alongside popular culture which produced it. Unfortunately however, it has likewise come to reflect the ills of social structures, specifically that of gender oppression. This is seen in how females are represented as being oversexualized in video games. Massive Online Battle Arenas are the newest trend in gaming and this genre of video game also participates in the proliferating of gender stereotypes. This work studies this phenomenon through the use of Michel Foucault?s notion of the Panopticon, which treats the body as a field of political power where knowledge of a body correlates with power. The author argues that the MOBAs are a panoptic structure in reinforcing of gender stereotypes and beauty ideals that are present in the patriarchial running of its infrastructure.
