Abstract

This study is a descriptive research that defined effective collaboration, and described the collaborative process among the director and the artists in creating a student-run musical play in UPLB. The hindrances to collaboration were identified, and the effectivity of collaboration was evaluated in terms of creating a successful production. The musical, Drive Thru, was mounted with student participants, who underwent the three production phases: pre-production, production, and post-production. They were assigned specific positions, such as stage manager, set designer, costume designer, technical director, lights designer, musical director, choreographer, or actor. The researcher served as the director, who wrote a directing journal to note observations during the production process. Participants of the production underwent a focus group discussion. The artistic merits of the production and the effectivity of the collaboration were also evaluated through a survey questionnaire answered by the audience, and through interviews with three critics. Through the focus group discussion, five groups of hindrances to collaboration were identified, namely physical capabilities academics and other commitments failure to communicate lack of funds and equipment and personal concerns. These hindrances were balanced out by the relaxed environment during the production process. The survey and the interviews gathered mostly positive feedback. Majority of the respondents were able to grasp the message of the production, and thought each aspect of the production formed a cohesive whole. Thus, the collaboration was considered effective and successful.
