Abstract
Life table analysis was constructed to know the host suitability of A. destructor in two host plant, banana and coconut. The number of surviving individuals per stage and fecundity parameter was measured to construct life tables. The survivorship of coconut scale insects reared in coconut was high than those reared in banana. Survival rate was relatively higher from second instar to adult stage in females reared in coconut than in banana which is 81.63% and 61.32%, respectively. It was also the same for males in coconut from second instar to the pupal stage having higher survival rate in than those in banana which is 97.89% and 92.97%, respectively. Also, the reproductive potential of those reared in coconut was better compared to those in banana having a higher total and individual fecundity. The net reproductive rate was high in coconut which is 17.26 and 2.33 for banana. The population growth rate of those reared in coconut was also better than in banana. The time it took for the population to double was shorter in coconut which is only 5 days and longer in banana which is 12 days. The population of coconut scale insect in coconut has a finite rate of increase of 1.13 within the mean generation time of 22 days which is faster than those coconut scale insects reared in banana having 1.06 rate of increase within the mean generation time of 27 days. The study showed that coconut is a more suitable host of coconut scale insect than banana.
