Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of combining rice straw with various organic materials such as azolla, ipil-ipil leaves, cow manure and carabao manure in improving the quality of the rice straw-based vermicomposts. The raw materials were pre-composted for two weeks before adding the earthworms into the vermicomposting beds. Changes in the chemical characteristics of the organic materials were monitored during the vermicomposting process. Mature vermicomposts and vermicasts collected after 10 weeks were analyzed for pH, C/N ratio, C and nutrient (NPK) content. Results revealed that combining rice straw with ipil-ipil leaves significantly improved the N content of the rice-straw based vermicomposts and vermicasts while addition of cow and carabao manures significantly increased P and K content. The lowest C/N ratio was obtained in the ipil-ipil leaves + rice straw combination.
