Abstract

Soybean, known as the wonder crop for its high protein and oil content, is one good alternative source of nutrients for the body. With increasing population, the demand for this commodity also increases. However, the supply is not enough to support the growing demand due to low production especially caused by poor seed quality. This study was done to determinethe effect of selected leaf extracts (Ivy Gourd, Kakawate, Kamias, and Malunggay) at varying concentrations (1%, 2.5%, 5%) in the germination and vigor of 5-month and 8-month old soybean seeds. In this study, presoaking of seeds was done in aqueous solutions of different leaf extracts at varying concentrations. Percent germination was only enhanced in the 8-month old seeds by 5% Malunggay leaf extracts. For the root, shoot and seedling lengths, an increase was observed in seeds soaked in 1% and 2.5% Malunggay and 2.5% and 5% Ivy gourd leaf extracts and evident decrease was seen in Kamias and Kakawate-treated seeds. On the other hand, seedling emergence was enhanced in seeds treated with 1% and 5% Kamias. No significant effect was observed in seedling biomass of both the 5-month and 8-month old soybean seeds.
