Abstract

Generally, the study aimed to determine the profitability of broiler farms in selected towns of Laguna. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) To describe the management practices employed by independent and contract broiler farms in Laguna; (2) To compare the profitability between different integrators under contract growing; (3) To compare the efficiency in input utilization of broiler farmers under different operations; and (4) To identify problems involved in independent and contract broiler farming and recommend solutions. Random sampling technique was used to identify the samples under independent operation. In terms of contract operation, stratified random sampling was done. Only farmers who were tied-up with San Miguel Foods Incorporated (SMFI) and Bounty Agro-ventures Incorporated (BAVI) were included in the study. Random sampling technique was used to identify samples from San Miguel Foods Incorporated and Bounty Agro-Ventures Incorporated. It was found out that contract growers were more efficient in utilizing its resources than the independent farmers. In addition, contract growers were more efficient in generating profits from every unit of investment. However, being efficient dose not also mean being profitable. The results showed that net farm income of independent farmers was higher than the net farm income of contract growers, but the difference in their net farm income was found to insignificant. Among the contract growers, SMFI’s farmers have higher net farm income than BAVI’s farmers. The major problems that broiler farmers encountered were; incompetent laborers and calamities. The study recommended that prospective broiler farmers can engage any of the operations since both independent and contract operation were profitable.
