Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at Sanctuario Nature Farm Corporation located at Indang, Cavite from July to December 2015. The general objective of the major practice was to acquire practical knowledge on the production and management of vegetables in an organic farm. The student performed and observed different farm activities like seedling production, land preparation, transplanting, watering, concoction preparation and application, trellising and vine training, mulching, weeding and harvesting. Technical problems included pest and diseases, and postharvest losses while non-technical problems included insufficient labor and supervision of field activities. Possible solutions to these problems were field monitoring of pest and diseases, rouging, spraying of Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN) to control pests linkages with other markets and provision of cold storage integration of similar field operations and development of standard operating procedure of the various field operations. Essentially, in order to produce good quality organic cucumber fruits, several factors must be considered. These factors includes (1) appropriate cultural practices which includes seedling production, land preparation, water and nutrient pest and disease management, trellising and the like, (2) material and labor inputs, (3) communication, (4) proper postharvest handling (5) infrastructure and the (6) market.
