Abstract

The major practice was conducted at The Orchard Golf and Country Club (TOGCC) in Dasmariñas, Cavite from April to May 2014 satisfying the 240 hours requirement. The study focused on landscape maintenance operations around the clubhouse of TOGCC with an area of approximately 2.6 hectares. Intermittent visits on the site during August to December 2014 and January to July 2015 was done for further data gathering and verification. The student observed and participated in different landscape maintenance operations such as irrigation, fertilizer application, pest control, weeding and cultivation, pruning, and waste management practices as well as ornamental plant nursery management. The major problems identified during the practicum were: (1) infestations of Pseudoplusia includens(Soybean looper) and mealy bugs on various plants (2) poor growth of Ixorarubra and, (3) mechanical damages on plants that causes total death of the plant. Using the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) framework, non-chemical control of pest such as the use of horticultural oil and insecticidal soap spray were recommended as the initial solution for pest infestations. Replacement of the damaged plants due to human activities with more sturdy plants was recommended as prevention for damages that usually leads to plant mortality. Significant learnings include realization of the difference between cultivation and pruning techniques of monopodial plants and sympodial plants. Additionally, using Hensley?s formula for computing productivity rate in the performance of 2 selected landscape maintenance operations, the following results were revealed: in pruning, it took an average of 63 days for 5 maintenance crew to prune a landscape of 4,680 m² using manual hedge shears in one year while it took 250 days for 5 maintenance crew to weed and cultivate a landscape area of 4,680 m² using hand trowel annually. The student acquired her firsthand experience and gained deeper understanding on the important link among landscape maintenance operations and management, human resources, their corresponding skills together with the support of materials from the administration. These factors were highly interwoven with each other.
