Abstract
Allelopathic properties of Amaranthus spinosus and its potential as weed control measure was assessed by testing its aqueous leaf extracts and pulverized dried leaf admixture against selected plant species. Through laboratory bioassay, germination and root and shoot elongation of lettuce, mungbean, cucumber, corn and itchgrass at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% concentration of dried and fresh leaf extract were observed. Germination and growth of corn in soil with the aqueous extracts and pulverized dried leaf admixture at 5%, 10% and 15% proportions was also evaluated to determine its potential in the field. Results have shown that as the concentration of the extracts increases, germination and root and shoot elongation of the plant species were increasingly inhibited. Dried leaf extract was more potent than fresh leaf extract and lettuce and cucumber were relatively more sensitive than the grasses. Corn was severely inhibited as stunting, yellowing, failure of leaves to unfold and eventual death were observed in pots with 10% and 15% pulverized dried leaf admixture.
