Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the performance and carcass quality of broilers fed with different levels of protein- enriched copra meal (PECM) at the finishing stage. A total of two- hundred twenty four, 4 week old male chicks were used in the study. Four dietary treatments were used in the experiment using randomized complete block design (RCBD). Fifty six birds were allocated per treatment and were further subdivided into eight replicates with each replicate having 7 birds. The dietary treatments used in the study for the finishing diet (28th - 35th day) are as follows: Diet 1: Corn-soya diet, Diet 2: Corn-soya diet with 10 % PECM, Diet 3: Corn-soya diet with 20% PECM and Diet 4: Corn-soya diet with 30% PECM. Results showed that the varying levels of PECM supplemented in the finisher diets has no significant effect on the body weight, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency, dressing recovery, carcass quality (breast yield, thigh yield and drumstick) and percent abdominal fat of broilers. Significant effect was only observed on the body weight gain parameter of the broilers. Broilers fed with diets containing 0 % PECM has the highest income over feed and chick cost followed by 10% PECM supplementation. It can be concluded that protein-enriched copra meal can be used as a replacement to soybean meal as a plant- protein source for broilers in the finishing stage especially when SBOM is limited or scarce
