Abstract

The off-campus major practice was conducted at the Bureau of Plant Industry- Plant Quarantine Service (BPI-PQS) Division from January 24, 2012 to March 12, 2012. This helped the student gain knowledge and gave her hands-on experience to the different plant disease diagnosis and detection procedures in the diagnostic laboratory of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Plant commodities intercepted at the airport terminals were brought to diagnostic laboratory for disposal or destruction. Most of these were confiscated because they lacked proper permit and clearances required by the Philippine plant quarantine regulations in transporting any plants, vegetative plant materials, fruits and seeds within and outside the country. Samples were examined for directly and indirectly presence of any cosmopolitan or exotic pests. Pathogens like Alternaria sp., Botryris sp., Colletotrichum sp., Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp. and Rhizopus sp. were detected and categorized as cosmopolitan. Insects like mealy bugs and scale insects were also detected from the intercepted plant samples. Every activity undertaken and samples received were documented before dumping in the compost pit. The student was also exposed to other plant quarantine stations like PQS-Seaport and PQS-NAIA and gained knowledge on the requirements needed to import, export and transport of plant commodities within the country as mandated by quarantine laws. The whole experience allowed the student to better understand the important roles of plant quarantine services their current diagnostic procedures, and needs for physical and technical upgrade.
