Abstract

The study was done to analyze the profitability of swine production under the Gilt Loan Program of Tanauan City, Batangas. The specific objectives of the study were: (1) to describe the operation of the Gilt Loan Program of Tanauan City; (2) to determine the net farm income and net cash income of swine production under the Gilt Loan Program of Tanauan City; (3) to determine the loan repayment rate of the program; (4) to determine the factors affecting the delinquency of swine-beneficiaries under the Gilt Loan Program; (5) to identify problems encountered by the program and the beneficiaries and to recommend possible solutions. Both primary and secondary data were utilized in the study. Primary data were gathered through personal interviews using pre-tested questionnaires. Complete enumeration of the 36 swine-beneficiaries was done. The beneficiaries were categorized into two: those who received fattener-type gilts and those who received breeder-type gilts. Secondary data on the other hand were taken from Office of the City Veterinarian (OC-VET) who was the implementer of the program. Results were analyzed using descriptive analysis, costs and returns analysis, and logistic regression analysis. Twenty-six of the swine-beneficiaries interviewed received fattener-type gilts while the remaining 10 received the breeder-type gilts. Costs and returns analysis revealed that those who received fattener-type gilts had the higher net cash income compared to those who received breeder-type gilts. In terms of net farm income, beneficiaries who received breeder-type gilts earned higher than those who received fattener-type gilts. Logistic regression analysis showed that the only significant factor that affects the delinquency of the swine-beneficiaries was the type of gilt received, whether breeder-type or fattener-type. The repayment rate of beneficiaries who received fattener-type gilts was 98.36 percent, higher than those who received breeder-type gilts which was 90.48 percent. Problems faced by the beneficiaries include poor condition of animals dispersed, delay visit of technician, and high costs of feeds. Hence, it is recommended for the OC- VET to make sure that the animals they disperse are healthy, productive and quality pigs. It is also recommended that OC-VET visit each area of the beneficiaries regularly, maybe two to three times a week, so that whenever technical help is needed by the beneficiaries they could respond immediately. For the high costs of feeds, they could address this problem by implementing another scheme of loan, loans which are in-cash and are for the feeds expenses only so that beneficiaries could somehow overcome the high costs of feeds. And lastly, there should be a certain percentage of total breeder-type gilts dispersed for every loan released given that production of this type of gilts involved higher expenses and beneficiaries for this type have the higher probability of being delinquent. In this way, beneficiaries and the Program could have higher repayment and collection rate.
