Abstract

This was a parametric study and optimization of extraction of polyphenols from mango peel using 2K full-factorial analysis and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) - Boox-Behnken Design. Parametric study showed that the factors solids loading, acetone concentration and extraction time, are all significant factors (p<0.05) and can be used in the RSM to get the optimum conditions. The results showed that the quadratic models derived from the responses (total phenolic and antioxidant activity) correlated well with the experimental data at R² of 0.9971 and 0.9668 respectively. Solids loading and acetone concentration significantly affected the responses (p<0.05). A high solids loading and high acetone concentration was the most effective for increasing the extractable total ohenolic and antioxidant activity of the mango peel. Therefore, the optimal conditions that maximized the extraction of the total phenolic and antioxidant activity for the mango peel were solids loading of 15.00% w/v, acetone concentration of 60.00% v/v and extraction time of 2.89 hours. Upon experimental verification, the actual values of the responses using the optimum conditions were within 95% interval of the predicted values 60.4297 mg GAE and 0.5630 respectively.
