Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at Foremost Farms located at Barangay Pinugay, Baras, Rizal from May 1 to May 30, 2009. The last two days of the practicum was spent at its corporate office in Pasig to participate in feedmill operations as well as to undergo debriefing from the company?s human resources department head. Considered to be one of the largest on-site swine farms nationally, Foremost Farms utilizes a farrow-to-finish type of operation in marketing quality hogs to meet the local demand for pork. The farm is Pinugay mainly consists of 12 units, with each unit composed of three sections: breeding, farrowing and nursery, and fattening section, respectively. As of May 2009, the average sow level of each unit ranges from 800 to as high as 1000 heads, with 5 junior and senior boars per unit. The student was assigned to Unit 3 where he spent approximately one week in each of the three main sections as well as another week spent at other vital installations within the farm. During the four weeks of farm practice in Pinugay, the student was able to observe and participate in the day-to-day operations. Moreover, the theoretical knowledge gained from the university was used to evaluate the various farm operating procedures and techniques learned on site. Differences in management protocols as well as production parameters were analyzed using a Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) matrix, from which, recommendations were made.
