Abstract

Analysis of the Consumption Behavior for Ampalaya, Okra and Sitaw in Cabuyao, Laguna, 2015 The study analyzed the consumption behavior for Ampalaya, Okra and Sitaw in Cabuyao, Laguna. Specifically, it aimed to: a) characterized the consumers of the said vegetables in Cabuyao, Laguna b) determine the consumer preference for the three types of vegetables c) determine the consumption behaviour for the said vegetables d) determine the factors that affect their consumption behavior and e) suggest recommendations for the improvement of the consumption of ampalaya, okra and sitaw based on the results. The study area was Poblacion 1, 2 and 3 in Cabuyao, Laguna. One hundred consumers were conveniently selected. Primary data collected from the consumer-respondents using s pre ?tested interview schedule. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics using frequencies, percentages, and averages. Chi-square Test of Independence among the socio-demographic and economic characteristics and volume of vegetable purchase was also performed. The results revealed that for ampalaya consumers most commonly preferred attribute was color, specifically it has to be dark green. Okra consumers are very particular of the state of maturity, they wanted relatively younger or immature okra as indicated by the ease of snapping of the vegetables pointed tip. For sitaw, color was also preferred by consumers and similar to ampalaya, it has to be darker green. The vegetables with the highest average weekly volume of consumption was ampalaya with 1.63 kg and the highest average buying price was paid for okra at Php58.15/kg. Majority of the consumer-respondents also preferred to purchase their vegetables from the Cabuyao Retail Plaza. It was also observed that most of the consumers purchased their vegetables once to twice a week and most respondents consumed the vegetables during lunch hour. Results of the chi-square test for independence proved that the prices of ampalaya, okra and sitaw significantly affected the volume of consumption for each vegetable. This may have been due to the fact that consumer-respondents are aware that these vegetables are necessities for good health. Given that all of them are readily available, highly accessible and are regular in the Filipinos vegetable diet, the other factors may not have exerted so much effect, hence were tested as insignificant. The consumer-respondents complained of the high retail price and the limited supply of the vegetables. As end receivers in the marketing system, they feel burdened when they experienced such inconvenience. With this, local farmers should be encouraged to engage more in producing these vegetables locally and marketing them within the city. Varieties that match the attributes preferred by the respondents are available and should be planted to suit their preference. Proper timing of harvest with due consideration of stage of maturity should be observed to ensure marketability. Locally-produced vegetables will be fresher and would be cheaper as they were able to avoid long travel time and high marketing cost.
