Abstract

Since coconut farmers are still considered the poorest of the poor in the agricultural community, it is the objective of this study to analyze the marketing of coconut products such as young fresh coconuts and buko pie in Batangas. To attain this objective, the analytical methods namely, 1) Costs and Returns Analysis, 2) Marketing Margin Analysis, 3) Breakdown of consumer Peso Analysis and 4) Profit Cost Ratio Analysis were employed. The primary data were generated from the top 2 coconut producing municipalities in Batangas, which are San Juan and Sto. Tomas. The master list of coconut farmers were generated from the Philippine Coconut Authority. The study revealed that farmers, assembler-wholesalers and processors-retailers were the only key players present in the marketing chain of buko in Batangas. The results of the costs and returns analysis showed that processing buko into buko pie generates the highest net than selling it as fruit. Also, the processor retailer incurred the highest marketing margin since they incur the highest marketing cost among the farmers and assembler-wholesalers. In the results of the breakdown of consumer analysis, it was revealed that the processor-retailers get the highest percentage of the price that was paid by the consumers. Lastly, the profit cost ratio analysis revealed that processor-retailers get a higher return for every one peso invested in the business. The study also revealed that farmers, assembler-wholesalers and processor retailers face different kinds of problems and constraints. The farmer?s low productivity and low sales stemmed from 1) the poor weather, 2) attack of pests and 3) poor relationship with customers. On the other hand, the assembler-wholesaler did not mention any problems with their business. Lastly, the processor-retailers face problems such as 1) high competition of buko pie in Batangas and 2) the poor relationship with customers. Thus, the study recommended that value addition must be performed in order to increase the income of the farmers and assembler-wholesalers. This could also help households who want to earn extra income. The farmers also need capital assistance from the government in order for them to improve their businesses and be able to perform value addition. Lastly, the government or scientists should conduct researchers on how to cure pests especially ?cocolisap? since it was the major reason of the declining and sales of the farmers.
