Abstract

The Resource Generation and Development Office under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development (OVCPD) reports that there are investors planning to put up a 5-MW solar PV plant in the university. Assessment of this plan was based on the condition of the sites, the effect of the injection of the plant to the distribution system of UPLB and the rate of return of investment of the future project in order to determine the feasibility of the project. The OVCPD granted two sites for the proposed project, each having an area of eight hectares. Site 1 is located near IRRI gate while site 2 is at the science part. These sites were evaluated using industry-approved checklist by Lumby (2015) and were found to be good locations for the solar PV plant. In addition, simulations were made for the load flow analysis of the distribution system of UPLB with and without the solar PV plant. Three installation schemes were used to compare for percent deviation and cost construction. Results show that the three installation schemes did not contribute to any percent unbalances in the distribution system. Lastly, computations show approximately 3.5 years for all the three schemes for the return of investment. Also, it was found that the 500 modules-per-array scheme has the right balance between good percent deviation and cost of construction. To sum it up, it can be said that the possible inclusion of the future solar PV plant will be beneficial to the university.
