Abstract

This study developed an android application that automates the process of paper chromatography reading, specifically in locating amaranth red blot in the separation of violet Ferna food dye. The chromatogram from the paper chromatography experiment is digitized by taking its image through an android device?s camera. The image is stored as data bits in the android device?s memory. The stored image in the android memory is read and analysed through an image processing algorithm. The image processing algorithm is designed to convert colored bitmap to grayscale. Noise reduction and enhancement is ensured through the application of low pass filters blur and smoothen. The retardation factor (Rf), estimated from 80 samples of chromatogram, and densitometry analysis was the basis for the algorithm to determine the presence of the amaranth red blot. Noise reduction in the image was verified through declining measurement of SNR and PSNR as the image was subjected to the low pass filters. Mann-Whitney U Test was used to verify the relevant decrease of SNR and PSNR. After testing the device on a total of 204 samples of chromatogram, the device was found to have positive test accuracy of 70.21% accuracy and negative test accuracy of 56.25%.
