Abstract

This study aimed to present the current status of the Laguna duck egg industry and assess its strength and weaknesses to pinpoint the problems, gaps and prospects for investment and market opportunities. It also identified the key factors of competitive success and failure of the industry in the relation to the challenges and prospects. Primary and secondary data were gathered in this study. Primary data were obtained from an interview of five (5) commercial duck farm owners in Pila and Victoria, Laguna. Pila and Victoria were selected because these are the two municipalities with the largest commercial duck farms. A structured questionnaire was used in interviewing the respondents. The secondary data like agricultural statistics from 2005-2015 were gathered through research from different public and private institutions like PSA, DA, DOST and FFTC. The sources of data of the researcher were journals, publications and special problems from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. The study employed both qualitatively methods of analysis using Porters five forces model and value chain analysis. Currently, the duck egg industry in Laguna is experiencing its all-time low inventory level. It was found that there is an estimated 275,000 MT difference between the inventory of the industry before and after 2009. From being one of the top producers of duck and duck products, Laguna now ranks at the 11th place overall. One of the problems highlighted in the study was the inefficient marketing system within the industry. The marketing and distribution of the processed duck eggs rely on too many intermediaries leading to a significant gap between the initial price and retail of the products. Moreover, the industry has experienced a decrease in demand because of the changing lifestyle of the consumers. People are now becoming more demanding in relation to production quality and food safety. The misconception about the duck eggs containing unhealthy nutrients also added to the decline in the demand. To meet the changing preference of consumers, there have been initiatives made by both the private and the public sector to promote the consumption of duck eggs and debunk the misconception that connotes duck product consumption. The integration of the duck farms along the vertical system in the production chain was recommended to decrease and eliminate the inefficiency in the marketing chain of the industry. The commercial duck egg industry in Laguna still has the potential to get back to its previous high production in recent years, individual farm earnings has actually gradually increase. This could be a good indication to attract investors that could venture in this industry.This study recommended that government and non-government organizations should provide extension services and trainings in areas where knowledge is lacking to help the duck farmers know more about the market situation. Other recommendations include vertical integration among duck farms, standard grading of duck eggs and downstream processing off duck eggs.
