Abstract
A technical performance evaluation of the IRRI PT-5 using air-cooled diesel engines with power ratings of 3.73kW, 5.22kW and 7.46kW was conducted to know the effect of the different power ratings in performing plowing operation. The machine was evaluated in terms of its field efficiency, specific fuel consumption and drawbar power. The ease or difficulty in terms of maneuverability, balance and control using the machine were also evaluated. Results showed that the highest field efficiency of 87.77% was obtained using the 7.46kW engine. The field efficiency increases with increasing power ratings. Moreover, fuel consumption and drawbar power also increases as the engines' power rating increases. The highest SFC of 1,099.87g/kWh was obtained using the 5.22kW engine followed by the 7.46kW engine with 1,077.87 g/kWh SFC while the lowest SFC of 941.42 g/kWh was obtained using 3.73 kW engine. The highest drawbar power of 592.32W was obtained using 5.22kW engine followed by 3.73kW engine with 575.17 W at the speed of 3.2 kph then the 7.46kW engine with 533.39 W at the speed of 2.8kph. In terms of maneuverability and balance, the farmer operator preferred the smaller power rating. Further, all power rating were rated moderate in terms of controlling the machine
