Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the Villa Escudero Plantations and Resort (VEPAR) in San Pablo City, Laguna. It has a total land area of 450 hectares which includes the resort with an area of 85 hectares. The resort is planted with many different tropical ornamental plants – from ground covers to trees. The student participated in the operations of the landscaping department which consists of the landscape architect, a landscape horticulturist, and 30 workers. Base mapping with the purpose of getting accustomed on how to envision a landscape design was peformed. The major practice also includes the implementation of hardscape and transplanting of African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) at the coffee shop area which costs Php 168,102. Landscape maintenance operations were also performed in other areas. During the maintenance phase, supervisory skills are practiced at the conference hall grounds. Activities that are performed in the maintenance operations are mowing, weeding, plant maintenance and irrigation. A cost analysis on maintenance at the conference hall area, which has an area of 6.46.5 m2, was performed. The amount calculated for the monthly cost of maintenance operations is Php14,948 or Php23 per square meter. The time duration for the major practice is insufficient to address important concerns such as pest and disease management. Problems are encountered during the major practice particularly the usage and handling of tools as well as the application of fertilizer and pesticides. These problems are presented with recommendations for improvement.
