Abstract

The general objective of the study was to analyze the impacts of computer games on school performance of high school students in Los Baños, Laguna. Particularly, it aimed to provide a profile of the respondents, identify the significant factors that could affect the student’s decision to play, establish the relationship between the number of hours spent on playing and student’s performance at school, estimate the computer gamers’ probability of failing, estimate the average cost incurred by a gamer when playing in computer shops, and provide economic implications based on the output of the study. The study was carried out by interviewing a total of 240 high school students from Los Baños National High School, Los Baños Community National High School, Maquiling School Inc., and Trace College. Based on the results, allowance, gender, peer group and year level positively affects student’s decision to play. Also, time spent on studying, year level, final grade during Grade 6, number of books and time spent playing computer games are found to be significant factors affecting student’s performance. Being a freshman or sophomore student and time spent playing are the factors that showed negative relationship with grades. Based on the computations, the probability of a computer gamer to fail is 61%, given that the student has greater than four siblings, has a final Grade 6 rating of at most 84, have lesser teachers at school, spends lesser hours per day on studying, living near a computer shop, and spends more hours per day on playing computer games. Results of the survey showed that 60% of the students’ daily allowance is spent on playing which amounts to around PhP 39 per day per student and approximately PhP 1,267.50 is the contribution of the total sample to the total demand of computer games. The study proved that computer gaming has a negative impact on student’s grades. Aside from computer gaming, factors such as quantity of books and teachers affect students’ grades. Hence, the government should increase the number of books and teachers especially in public high schools to reduce the probability of failing and increase students’ grades.
