Abstract

The study analyzed the effects of early childhood education (ECE) programs among Grade II students in selected elementary schools in Los Baños, Laguna. Ordinary least square (OLS) was employed in the study with average Grade I grades of Grade II students used as the dependent variable to measure the effect of ECE in academic performance of the students. The impact of school inputs and socio-environmental factors were also examined. A total of 173 respondents were obtained from seven public and seven private elementary schools. Out of 173, only ten students did not undergo ECE which implies that most of the parents enroll their child under ECE programs. Based from data, pre-school enrollment in Los Baños has increased from school year 2003-2004 to school year 2007-2008. Moreover, the total cost of sending a child in private pre-school was higher compared to government learning centers. This explained the large number of enrollees in public pre-schools. After performing the regression, results showed that ECE is significant but has negative relation with average grades. This indicated that an increase in the level of ECE program taken will lead to a decline in grades. However, several factors appeared to be significant such as class size, facilities, educational attainment of mother and father and gender.
