Abstract

Tourism cannot be defined as an independent industry, but rather it is composed of businesses from different sectors. Due to this, limited economic analysis of tourism has been conducted in the country. Thus, this study provides an economic impact analysis of tourism in the Philippines using an input-output model. An overview of the status and trends of Philippine tourism is also provided by the study based on tourism indicators. Tourism sub-sectors and tourism-related sectors were identified based on PTSA and input-output tables. Seventeen corresponding input-output industries were identified and is grouped into accommodation, food and beverages, guided tour, entertainment and recreation, and miscellaneous tourism services sector. The Input-Output tables of 2000 were also used to obtain economic multipliers. Results show that the largest output multiplier is for accommodation sector. Furthermore, the entertainment or recreation sector has the highest income and tax multiplier while the import and export multiplier is highest in transportation and food and beverages sector, respectively. This study also estimated the economic impact of tourism in terms of output, income, indirect taxes, import and export with the use of the tourism expenditure and inverse matrix coefficients. The study found out that, in general, there is a decreasing impact on the mentioned indicators from 2000 to 2003 as a result of the decreasing tourism expenditure. In 2004 to 2007, the impact on these indicators also increased along with the increasing tourism expenditure.
