Abstract
This paper analyzed the factors behind the growth of the service sector in the Philippines. This study proved that the country is experiencing a service – led growth. It was shown that the service sector is the currently the biggest contributor to the economy’s GDP and employment. It also showed descriptive analysis on the structural changes brought by the rapid growth of services. The service sectors has six subsectors, namely – transportation, communication, and storage, trade, ownership dwelling and real estate, finance, private services and government services. Each subsector was analyzed according to their performance and trends, in terms of growth rates were also discussed. The growth of the service sector and its subsectors were empirically analyzed. The results showed that the growth of the industry sector, services exported and foreign investments proved to be significant in the growth of the service sector. Services growth was also driven by the growth of two subsectors. These are ownership dwelling and real estate and private services. These subsectors are referred to as the fast growing subsectors. The other subsectors, which more or less performed on a constant trend, were categorized as the trend growing subsectors.
