Abstract

To participate in attaining food security, the field practice on the drying operations was conducted from April 19-MAy 28, 2013 at SL Agritech Corporation located at Brgy. Oogong, Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Philippines. SL Agritech Corporation (SLAC) is one of the forerunners of the Philippines' own hybrid rice program. SL got its name from the father of MR. Henry Lim Bon Liong, owner of SLAC, Seh Leng. "Agri-technology for mankind" is the vision of SLAC. The field practice focused mainly on the drying operations of the recirculating dryers. The dryer's specifications, capacity, and efficiency air velocity sound level grade of dried paddy dust collector system furnace efficiency and good storage practice were the only parameters observed, computed and evaluated. During the field practice the trainee gathered drying data and was able to compute a heating system efficiency of 32% and drying system efficiency of 44.1%. Both efficiencies are lower than the specified performance criteria for mechanical grain dryers which are 65% for heating and 75% for drying. The trainee concluded that losses can be due to worn out materials in the furnace and ducting system. The trainee recommends that SLAC should have a pre-cleaner system to lessen unwanted materials being dried thus increasing the drying rate. Also,, worn out materials should be replaced and fixed immediately to increase heating and drying system efficiency. Furthermore, proper ventilation and illumination should be maintained to provide good working environment. Overall,. the field practice provided the trainee a different learning experience. The trainee was able to apply the theories and concepts in thermodynamics, psychrometry, and plant design. Furthermore, the trainee learned that reduction at one stage of post harvest losses such as in drying could greatly affect food security through increasing rice production.
