Abstract

System protection for distribution equipments are being practiced using coordination and flexibility studies. The studies vary according to the type of distribution system being considered. For underground distribution system, the main line is protected by the padmounted switchgears which are coordinated to the circuit breakers in the substation. Meanwhile, for the lateral lines, padmounted transformers are equipped with properly coordinated expulsion fuse and current-limiting fuse for circuit protection and transformer protection, respectively. However, for system protection4 only the main lines are considered in coordination studies. This paper on system protection for underground distribution system considered the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP), the only fully-underground distribution system supplied by the MERALCO-SOUTH. It aims to provide a guide in padmounted switchgear-circuit breaker coordination and to devise a flexibility scheme for FPIP and relate it to system protection. For the padmounted switchgear and circuit breaker coordination, the factors for the study included cable ampacity, load of customers and fault currents Fault currents were based on fault mapping, a process of determining the maximum loading of each circuit in the prerequisite. The study used is based on a N-1 flexibility scheme. This means a one-at-time outage of circuits.
