Abstract

Climate change is widespread around the globe and the easiest way how households can relate to such world-wide problem is through their spending. Using a pre tested questionnaire, households were asked of their perception concerning climate change and also their costs from temperature increase and flooding damages starting from the typhoon Milenyo event (September 2006 to September 2008). Results show that only 48% of the respondents are aware that climate change exists but still 86% of them think that climate change is a serious matter. The costs associated with temperature increase and flooding were both summed up representing the household’s minimum valuation of each of these impacts. These two were then added to get the total cost of households’ coping and adapting measures. A total of PhP 3,974,634 was spent by households to mitigate the effects of climate change during the considered period. Of this amount, 76.51% was attributed to coping mechanisms against temperature increase while 23.49% was due to flooding. Regression analysis also showed that household income significantly affects the total cost incurred by households in coping and adapting to climate change.
